Companies that practice practical methods of production without depleting natural resources or harming them in manufacturing are considered sustainable in their efforts. Intradeco Apparel Inc. is such a company, and for its continued and concentrated practices that minimize the environmental footprint and enhance the quality of life, it has been awarded three awards from three different esteemed entities (twice from one major organization).
On March 23rd, 2010, Intradeco Apparel was spotlighted by Apparel Magazine, a fashion trade publication. Winning the “2010 Sustainability All-Stars” award, Intradeco was one of five companies to be honored at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles.
A large part of Intradeco Apparel’s manufacturing uses organically grown cotton. Organic cotton farming methods prevent pollution of the water table, prevent potential fatal pesticide poisoning of farmers and their families, and improve and maintain biodiversity.
Intradeco also reduced energy consumption through reduction in electrical lighting costs, annual reduction in CO2 emission, reduction in methane emissions, and nitrous oxide emissions. By October 2010 Intradeco will reduce greenhouse gases by 16%,reduce solid waste by 10% and reduce water consumption by 10%.
Felix Siman, CEO of Intradeco Apparel states, “We are very proud of our company’s commitment and undivided efforts to be sustainable. Sustainability must be a culture in the company. This has to emanate from the directors, to human resources, manufacturing operations and so on. By getting everyone involved in these goals we are able to develop more sustainable methods in all our company divisions. From the amount of disposable coffee cups used, to using co-energy generation in our dye and finish facility; to efficient lighting, product development and packaging.” He adds, “We are very pleased to be recognized and singled out by some of the most prestigious organizations for our ecological solutions.”
In addition to the Apparel Magazine 2010 Sustainability All-Star Award, an “Award for Excellence in Energy Conservation” was presented to Intradeco Apparel by P. E. Energy, Inc. in March 2009 for ongoing efforts in reducing energy consumption. All indoor lighting was addressed in the implementation of energy saving programs. Sustainability goals were also cited which would reduce greenhouse gases, reduce solid waste and reduce water consumption.
As Walmart pursues its sustainability goal of being supplied 100 percent by renewable energy, Intradeco has taken it upon themselves to stay ahead of the curve. The end goal to this would be to create zero waste in manufacturing and selling products that sustain people and the environment. Walmart has recognized Intradeco’s efforts, and has named it “Sustainable Supplier of the Year” for two consecutive years, 2008 and 2009. This award came after all the initiatives taken by Intradeco with its Men’s, Boys, and Infant Organic Products, recycled polyester, biodegradable bags, and energy efficient buildings.
